Today our pilgrims presented the house they helped build with their Mexican family. They tell us that everyone was happy and joyful, but that it has been an emotional and rewarding experience for them as each member of their Mexican family personally thanked them for their efforts and for their new home. They also decided to take the family shopping and furnished the new home! They are in Valle de Bravo, Mexico and have helped construct a house for a poor family who is currently living in a tent. The family were a little surprised to see all these females and a priest turn up... but we know these girls - they have the Maronite spirit of boldness and resilience and got the job done! They are asking you to keep all the poor and marginalised in Mexico in your prayers. Abeer was at the river Jordan, at the site where Jesus was baptised, for the feast of the Glorious Epiphany. Here she is chanting the ‘Our Father’ in Syriac. He made occasion by the water to come down and to dwell in us; like the occasion of mercy when He came down and dwelt in the womb ... Ephrem, Hymn on the Epiphany 8 #maronite #syriac #epiphany #godislove #livingmaronite In 2016 Pope Francis convened a commission to study the history of female deacons in the Catholic Church. The report has concluded and has been presented to the Holy Father for consideration. Amongst those selected to work on the commission was Professor Phyllis Zagano, who has done some research on the females deacons in the Maronite Church. The role of even the male deacon changed over the course of history and varied in different parts of the Church. The Syriac Church is well familiar with deacons and one of its most famous deacons, St Ephrem, has had an enormous influences on the theology and spirituality of the Maronite Church. He helped the poor and needy, preached the Gospel and served between the laity and the priest in the liturgy. St Ephrem wrote hymns which are still used in our liturgy today. He reintroduced female choirs into the liturgy. A deacon is not a priest and there are different levels within the diaconate. In the short period prior to Vatican II, in some parts of the Church, the diaconate become a road to priesthood and nothing more. However, after Vatican II, there was a restoration to the permanent male diaconate and today a deacon can conduct marriages and baptisms in the ordinary way (Latin Church). It is its own important ministry distinct from the priesthood. In this very recent interview, two members of the Commission, Professor Phyllis Zagano (Hofstra University) and Fr Bernard Pottier, S.J., (Professor and at the Institut D’Études Théologiques in Brussels) speak more about their research into the history of female deacons and their time on the commission. Both agree that female deacons were never a homogenous group of the universal Church and that at have at various times and in various places female deacons have been ordained. Also interesting in the interview is the discussion about the role that female deacons may have had in the Maronite Church. In circumstances where a women ‘complained that her husband was beating her. It was the woman deacon who examined the bruises and gave the testimony to the bishop.’ You can see the interview at the link in the bio. #maronite #livingmaronite #femaledeacons #syriac Two contingents of Maronite youth from Australia are heading to World Youth Day in Panama which is set to begin on 22 January 2019. Our friend @joanneel, who is the youth co-ordinator at our own Parish of Our Lady of Lebanon Harris Park, sent us these photos and is with the group led by Mons Shora Maree. They have made a pit stop at another Our Lady of Lebanon in Puebla, Mexico (which has an amazing resemblance to our own Parish). They also visited St Charbel’s Church and Our Lady of the Martyrs Lebanon Eparchy. Long before Maronites settled in places like the US and Australia, they had travelled and remained in South America (including for the Mexican gold rush). The number of people of Maronite heritage in South America far outnumbers the number of Maronites anywhere else in the world. As a testimony to the witness that the Maronite Church can bear to all people of all nations, all the deacons and seminarians with Mons Shora in the first photo have no Lebanese heritage at all. They have been drawn to God because the beauty of Maronite Church has led them to him and not because of their ethnicity. Also, like in so many parts of the world, the Maronites have taken St Charbel with them into new lands and the devotion has spread throughout Mexico with statues of St Charbel found in churches all over Mexico, including ones that are not even Maronite.
